Edsa mishap kills sleepy bus driver

ANOTHER freak accident on Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa) killed a bus driver and injured 19 others after the vehicle hit a stalled dump truck in Quezon City on Friday morning.
Police identified the victim as Arturo Albadejo, 27, driver of the Malanday Metrolink bus that plied the Malanday-NAIA route.

The bus running at full speed suddenly hit a stalled dump truck at the corner of the northbound lane of Edsa and Quezon Avenue.

Some passengers claimed that Albadejo might have fallen asleep at the wheel, as the bus was swerving before it hit the dump truck.

Injured passengers were rushed to the East Avenue Medical Center (EAMC) and Quezon City General Hospital.

Four were in critical condition and were identified as Basilio Silverio, 20, who suffered wounds on his face and fractured knees and legs; Jenny Arangote, 22, who also got wounded in her face and feet; and Erwin Carpio, 31, who was also wounded in the face. The three are allowed to go home in the afternoon by EAMC doctors after receiving treatment.

The fourth passenger, Romeo Castañeda, was confined at the Quirino Labor Hospital.

The dump truck driver said that his vehicle stalled due to engine trouble, but denied not using an early warning device as his companion was behind the truck, signalling approaching vehicles to avoid their truck.
