POEMS BY REYA MARI S. VELOSO

Henchmen

We are Lucas and Toole, we are brothers, we are sisters —

You are the mortar, I am the pestle, You are the door, I am the key —
I am the knife, You are the skin, You are the set of molars, I am the meat —
We are thresholds,

We are Superman and Batman, we are mortal enemies, we are secret accomplices—
Our love is clandestine, immortal, sempiternal, symbiotic,
We are each other’s finish line,

We are Marx and Engels, Rizal and Blumentritt, we are lovers, we are friends —
We are each other’s dreams, we are our own set of disbelief —
Hand me the noose and I shall give you the blade,

We are Harper and Capote, we will grow old and moldy with each other’s words, pictures, sketches, jokes, insults, grievances —
We are each other’s living proof, We are each other’s punctuations —
You are my story, I am your subject,
We are each other’s art,

We are Julien and Sophie, our sick games are unending, we are never satisfied, our smiles and our wounds are no better than the other, each wound merits a smile, each smile is a cause for suffering,
We are juvenile, we are wise, we are jovial, we are in sorrow,
We are always smiling, We are always under each other’s skin
We have dared each other long ago, however illicit, however unconscious,
To beat time and space with our heartbeats

Look What I Got You

Remember that book you have always wanted to read, but you didn’t want to buy the copy on the book store because you were looking for the rare first edition? You still wouldn’t watch the movie they made out of that novel. I’ve seen it a hundred times though, while you were at work. Well, I haven’t stopped looking for that book either.

I have always wanted to buy you a guitar, but my knowledge on music and instruments are naturally stunted. I would get you a flute, but you might just hit me with it. I’d buy you a pair of nice headphones, too, but then you’re very meticulous with your musical paraphernalia.

You wouldn’t stop staring at those pair of Doc Marten’s combat boots. I’d like to buy them for you, but it just so happened that it was the last pair. So I bought it for myself instead. I’m pretty sure we wouldn’t want to wear matching shoes, would we? I think it’s enough that we wear matching pajamas with penguin prints on weekends.

A friend of mine is selling tickets to Coldplay’s concert. I thought about buying two, but I can only afford one right now. And I’m very certain that neither of us would be forgiving enough to only let the other watch it. We’ll go together next time, I promise. Maybe in Dublin. Maybe in Texas. Maybe in Melbourne.

I wish I could buy you a whole set of Palahniuk’s novels. Or even just the whole set of Harry Potter novels because for Pete’s sake, what kind of childhood did you have if you haven’t read those books yet? I want to take you shopping for shoes. Every week we look at our shoe closet and even if we couldn’t close the door anymore, one of us will still say, “I think I need new shoes.” Of course I’d like to take you to concerts and beat you into stealing a kiss from Hayley Williams. I would if I could. Maybe tomorrow, maybe soon. In the meantime, here’s a cheeseburger from McDonald’s. Enjoy it while it lasts.
