Undeniably one of the most highly anticipated sports events of the year, the UAAP Men’s Basketball season never fails to sell-out seats.
This year marked its 75th year anniversary, and many wondered if the Ateneo Blue Eagles would be dethroned of their championship status, or if they would legendarily achieve a 5-peat—for five years of consecutive victories.
Needless to say, the Ateneo Blue Eagles did not disappoint their Alma Mater, nor their numerous fans. Despite the intense competition from the UST Growling Tigers, as well as from the De La Salle Green Archers and the NU Bull Dogs, the Eagles soared high and claimed their victory. Now among the shining legends of the arena, the Eagles have joined the Philippine College Basketball lore as the first-ever to win five championships; taking their famous motto “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam” (All for the greater glory of God) to the next level.
Other highlights of the season included the proclamation of Bobby Parks as MVP for the second year in a row, as well as his exciting 35-point duel with DLSU’s Jeron Teng. Also memorable was another consecutive victory by the University of the Philippines Pep Squad, who was awarded its 3rd straight championship in the Samsung UAAP cheerleading competition.
Thus, the Ateneo Blue Eagles were not the only heroes on the court, because the inspiring sportsmanship and support of many others were equally legendary. Affirming this, Samsung Electronics Philippines Corporation created the Samsung Sixth Man Application, which allowed viewers to choose their own season’s favorites by simply logging on to the application and placing their votes.
For Samsung, the people’s choice is what counts. And thanks to Samsung, many of the league’s unsung heroes were given the chance to experience the appreciation felt by their fans.
On November 21, 2012, Samsung Sixth Man’s winners received their awards. Samsung users adored the lovely Selina Dagdag who was awarded as the Best Courtside Reporter. Basketball enthusiasts voted stellar players Kiefer Ravena, Greg Slaughter, Jelo Montecastro, Nico Salva, and Kevin Ferrer to comprise Samsung People’s Mythical Five. And lastly, Kiefer Ravena carried the Samsung People’s MVP award home beaming with pride.
Shining with brilliance in the league’s diamond celebration, Samsung’s Sixth Man Awardees left its mark on UAAP Season 75 and will not be forgotten by those who have chosen them. To review the past results, the Samsung Sixth Man Application may be downloaded from the Google Play Store for free.
The Samsung UAAP Assists competition also challenged the participating universities to “make every point matter for their alma mater.” The top 3 winners were awarded as well—with the University of the East in first place, the De La Salle University in second place, and the University of the Philippines in third place.
