South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics rolled out Galaxy Camera on Thursday based on the Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology, enabling users to upload pictures directly through the high-speed fourth-generation (4G) network.

The Galaxy Camera will be directly connected to Wi-Fi and third- generation (3G) network as well as the 4G LTE network, which will enable users to upload pictures on social media, including Twitter and Facebook, through the wireless networks right after taking them.

Powered by 4.1 Jelly Bean, the latest version of Android operating system, the Galaxy Camera came with a 4.8-inch touch screen and a 16.3 megapixel back side illumination (BSI) CMOS sensor, Samsung said.

“The Galaxy Camera incorporated telecommunication function into a camera for the first time in the world. It will open a new chapter in the digital camera industry,” Shin Jong-kyun, head of Samsung’s mobile business, told reporters at the launching event held in its Seoul headquarters.

Galaxy Camera users should subscribe to wireless carriers such as SK Telecom and KT if they want to enjoy the telecommunication function of the camera, adding to mobile charges burden.

Regarding this, Shin said that mobile data-charging structure showed signs of change globally, noting that users were expected to share data among multiple devices.

South Korea’s No. 2 mobile carrier KT said earlier this month that it planned to introduce a new monthly data-charging program that will allow subscribers to use data through multiple devices such as smartphone and tablet PCs. U.S. wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon Wireless already adopted similar programs.
