Indian mixed martial art (MMA) fighter Vishal Sharma defeated Filipino Bobby Besuna in the main event of Balikatan 14 entitled ‘Heart of a Warrior’ held at the Marikina Sports Center.
The 21-year-old Sharma of Budo Kai Do MMA from Punjab, India defeated Besuna of Bumag Makati via guillotine choke in the first round.
“This gold, I just did it all for India’s name” said Sharma.
In the co-main event, lady warrior from Spartacus MMA Gym Teddy Marie dela Cruz won via unanimous decision against half-Filipina Sahara Hamayon of 3MAC Muscat MMA Club. Dela Cruz dominated the whole fight using her straight-jabs and stand-up game of offense.
“Unexpected. Hindi ko inasahan na mananalo ako dahil noong nakita ko palang siya, ang laki niya. Binantayan ko talaga yung stand-up game ko kasi hindi ko masyado na-practice yung ground game ko,” Dela Cruz told The Manila Times after the fight.
Dela Cruz now holds a 1-1 win-loss MMA record.
Team Iran Greco-Roman fighter Ehsan Mousaei showed his prowess when he easily submitted another Indian fighter Gagandeep Sharma from Budo Kai Do via tapped out in round one.
“It’s not easy but I kept on punching him and just finish the fight,” said the 29-year-old Mousaei, a graduating Dentistry student at Manila Central University.
Mousaei competed in wrestling both in local and international, winning several medals including 10 golds.
Maic’s Gym fighter Jued Castillo sent Budo Kai Do’s Manpreet Singh Insan to canvass after he pulled a leg kick and finished the Indian fighter in 12 seconds after the opening bell. Castillo bagged the Knock-Out of the Night Award.
AJJ Gym’s Lady Warrior Irish Cristina Conrado won via default when her opponent from Budo Kai Do MMA Harpreet Kaur didn’t show up.
The Conrado-Kaur tandem was supposedly the main event.
In the Pro-MMA rule, Hybrid Yaw-Yan’s John Vincent Miraflor dominated Hitman Training Camp’s Jonar Cruz from Laguna, Yaw-Yan Kampilan fighter Jun Recillo won via technical knockout over United Sikaran Alliance’s fighter Dave Servancia.
In the MMA rule matches, Maic’s Gym fighter Mirvic easily crushed Yaw-Yan Kampilan fighter Franz Valentino and Ferdinand Pates of Team SPRAWL won via unanimous decision against Carlo Nino Arteza of Bear Cave MMA.
The 38-year-old Hybrid Yaw-Yan fighter Melanio Rayanon Jr. proves he is still fit to fight when he submitted the 29-year old Titan MMA fighter Francis Legaspi via rear naked choke within two-minute mark of round one. Rayanon bagged the Fastest Submission Trophy.
The United Sikaran Alliance fighter Reynold Vargas-Yaw-Yan MAC fighter Ryan Canata ended in a draw while Yaw-Yan Kampilan fighter Eric Heinz Llagas won via referee-stopped-contest against Samson College’s Keith Brian Lasquite.
In other MMA rule matches, Charles Dominick Sayson of Gibbor MMA won via rear naked choke over Jomar Garcia of Black Unicorn Martial Arts Gym, Hybrid Yaw-Yan’s Jose Maria Mendoza won via unanimous decision against Titan MMA’s Jerry Manalus, Empire Boxing Gym’s Franco Jose Gallardo defeated Yaw-Yan Kampilan’s Ace Darwin Ross via referee-stopped-contest, Herdoza Fitness Gym’s Michael Dulnuan made Hitman Training Camp’s Benjie Gil Angeles taps-out due to arm bar, Global Sikaran fighter Ronel Castro won via default against Franz Angelo Galvez of Hitman Training Camp, Yaw-Yan Kampilan’s Jhong Hurtado subdued MAP Rizal’s Derric Sy via unanimous decision and Higher Ground MMA’s Edrion Macatangay sends Arden Vallejo to canvass via rear naked choke in two minutes and forty-five seconds in round one.
In the kickboxing rule, the match between Dick Lopez of Spartacus MMA Gym and Sandip Talwar of Yaw-Yan Batangas also ended in a draw.
