It might had been overshadowed by Jaclyn Jose’s historic Best Actress win in the 69th Cannes International Film Festival, but another Filipino independent film also bagged major awards in an overseas competition.
Toto by director John Paul Su won as Best Foreign Film award in the 19th Los Angeles Comedy Festival, while Sid Lucero in the titular role Toto won as Best Actor.
Coincidentally, Jose and Lucero are co-actors in GMA Network’s afternoon series, The Millionaire’s Wife.
The film, which was originally screened in a special category of the 2015 Metro Manila Film Festival, tells the story of Toto, a young Filipino service attendant who is much willing to do whatever it takes to attain a US visa and live the American dream.
Columnist Katrina Stuart-Santiago in her column “Radikal Chika” for The Sunday Times Magazine wrote: “As his story unravels you realize that this is not just about a man with an American dreams. At the heart of it is our neo-colonial condition, one that isn’t just simply about the delusions we have of America, because it is in fact premised on the conditions of our distress within nation.”
