The nominees for the 40th Gawad Urian were officially announced this week with independent titles “Women of the Weeping River,” Ang Babaeng Humayo and Paglipay sweeping the most number of nominations for the major awards. Each movie garnered five nominations apiece.

Women of the Weeping River was an official entry to the QCinema Film Festival while Paglipay competed in ToFarm Film Festival. Ang Babaeng Humayo, on the other hand, served as former actress-turned-top TV executive Charo Santos’ vehicle for a big screen comeback following her retirement on 2016. Directed by Lav Diaz, it won the coveted Golden Lion Award at the 73rd Venice International Film Festival.
