BAGUIO CITY: Baguio City Rep. Nicasio M. Aliping Jr. is pushing for the approval of August 9 as National Indigenous People’s Day to advance the rights and collective well-being of indigenous people.
Aliping’s House Bill 4420 otherwise known as an “Act Declaring August 9 as National Indigenous People’s Day” was approved by the House of Representatives and has been transmitted to the Senate.
The bill is co-authored by another Cordilleran, Ifugao Representative Teddy Baguilat.
Aliping , who is also an IP, said there is no special day dedicated for indigenous peoples and it is important to have a special campaign for them.
Aliping said that the objective of the bill is “to establish a structured and comprehensive campaign to increase the awareness of the public about the rights of Indigenous People.”
“There is a need to intensify people’s aware–ness of our cultural heritage and rights and generate support and respect for these rights,” he added.
