An inmate was killed while 12 others were injured following a riot at the maximum security area of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntilupa City Tuesday night.
Three of the 12 wounded inmates are in critical condition, radio reports said.
With this development, visits to the prison facility were indefinitely suspended as NBP officials are now searching for weapons amid information that improvised shotguns were used in the riot.
“We decided to suspend visits to inmates in the maximum security area,” NBP head Supt. Venancio Tesoro said.
“At least one died while most of those involved had been returned to their dormitory,” he added.
Tesoro said their initial investigation showed the riot started when two inmates in one of the dormitories played a game of cara y cruz to while away the time at 11:30 p.m.
But the game turned ugly as the two inmates quarreled, with their respective gangmates coming to their aid, he said.
Radio reports said that warring gangs are from the Sputnik and Happy-Go-Lucky.
Tesoro also said their investigation showed the inmates used various weapons, including bladed ones.
He said the NBP has 2,000 Sputnik Gang members and 1,000 Happy-Go-Lucky Gang members.
“It was not a gang war but a war between two inmates from different gangs,” Tesoro stressed. PNA
