A marathon titled I RUN for integrity: I am Part of the Solution will be held in celebration of the anti-corruption week on December 12 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex in Pasay City.
“While the Integrity Initiative has already accomplished notable milestones, there’s still a lot that needs to be done. One of which is to encourage more engagement from individuals, especially the youth, to act with and uphold the value of integrity,” Henry Schumacher, vice-president of European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) and Integrity Initiative, Inc. told The Manila Times in a phone interview.
“Basically as an individual, I have the power to create change. It starts with me. And if you look at the subtitle, I am Part of the Solution, I am making the commitment and signing up that I will be part of the solution in creating an ethical environment,” added Schumacher.
Expected to join the marathon are 5,000 runners from different sectors of the government, business, civil society, academe, church and the media.
A total of 12,000 runners joined the successful 2011 and 2012 editions of the event organized by ECCP in support of Integrity Initiative Inc., a private sector-led campaign promoting common ethical standards among all sectors.
Over 2,000 company chief executives, 1,500 Department of Public Works and Highways contractors, 42 high government officials and 140 business organizations have already supported the campaign.
“If you look at the evolution of how we have been moving, we started basically with the private sector. If we don’t talk to the national government it’s going to be difficult to create change,” said Schumacher.
ECCP, American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines, Management Association of the Philippines and Financial Executives of the Philippines lead the event.
“I am seeing that this one is to be continued year-after-year now because this is so important to get that message across that if you don’t want to be part of the solution then you become part of the problem. And I think that is a powerful message that we are trying to get across” Schumacher said.
The race is divided into three categories namely three-kilometer, 5km and 10km. Registration is ongoing until December 4 at Chris Sports branches in Glorietta, Mall of Asia, Market Market and SM Megamall.
Ushering the marathon is the 5th Integrity Summit on December 9 at the Shangri-la Hotel in Makati City.
