Paoay, Ilocos Norte: The majestic Paoay Lake in Ilocos Norte is again hosting the International Regatta from October 30 to November 1.
International rowing athletes including locals will see action in the three-day event.
“Paoay Lake is now on the map [of international rowing events]and is already a part of the regatta circuit in Asia,” said Governor Imee Marcos.
Among the most notable parts of the Asian regatta circuit are Hongkong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
The Ilocos Norte Sports Development Office said that the Paoay Boat Club, the first ever group dedicated to rowing in Ilocos Norte, will compete this year’s edition of the tilt.
“The Paoay Boat Club who has members from the Mariano Marcos State University and Northwestern University will race against the Manila Boat Club and rowers from Asia, Australia and United Kingdom.”
Among the participants of the previous International Regatta in Paoay Lake is the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious boat clubs in the world.
Marcos said that foreign delegates are delighted with the location of the Paoay Lake because of its proximity to the Laoag International Airport.
“In Malaysia and the rest of the ASEAN countries that host rowing events, delegates have to travel for at least four hours on a rough road before reaching the rowing site.”
Paoay Lake, which spans 387 hectares, is located a few kilometers south of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. It has a rich biodiversity and hosts some migratory birds including the Great Cormorants.
