• Iraq’s win tows Philippines into Asian men’s volleyball quarterfinals


    South Gas Club Sports of Iraq defeated Altain Bars of Mongolia, 25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15, to jump into the quarterfinal round of 2014 Asian Men’s Volleyball Club Championship yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

    With Iraq’s win, the Philippines, which beat the Mongolians, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, in the opening day of the 16-nation competition, also advanced to the quarterfinals.

    “We’re now in the process of correcting the mistakes we had in our past two games,” Vicente said. “I expect the boys to come out fresh, strong and in fighting form come the quarterfinals.”

    Amaniev Metodi led the Iraqi attack to finish with 19 kills and seven aces for a total of 26 points.

    Hussein Gani Mustafa and Nasser Jameel Aseel delivered a combined 22 points built on 18 kills.

    Erdenebat Saikhanbataatar registered all of his 15 points on kills for the Mongolians, who were relegated to the battle for 9th to 16th place.
