THERE was a time, a vivid memory that still lingers in my mind, when speaking against Americans was seen as an act of ingratitude. Our elders talked about them like saviors descending from heaven, bringing us everything that is good and valued, from democracy to beauty pageants. Spain may have brought us Catholicism, but America brought Hollywood and basketball. And to many, that was all that mattered.
