• Isabela clash leaves one soldier dead, 3 others wounded

ONE soldier was killed and three others wounded after government troops clashed with a group of New People’s Army (NPA) rebels Tuesday night in a remote village in Isabela, military reports said Wednesday.

Lt. Colonel Ramon Zagala, the military chief information officer, said the clash between troops and rebels occurred Tuesday night in the vicinity of Barangay Balagan in San Mariano, Isabela.

Soldiers from the 52nd Division Reconnaissance Company were on security patrol in the area when they chanced upon at least 29 NPA rebels triggering an hour-long firefight, the military official said.

“One soldier was killed and three others were wounded in the encounter while there were unverified casualties on the enemy side,” Zagala said.

The name of the soldier was not made available pending notification of his kin, while the wounded soldiers were brought first to a station hospital before being airlifted to V. Luna Medical Center in Quezon City.

The military official said that troops were able to recover from the encounter site two improvised explosive device and six backpacks with subversive documents with high intelligence value.

“Although the military is focused on supporting disaster and relief operations in Luzon, the military will continue its security patrols to protect civilians from violence waged by NPA rebels,” Zagala said.
