Some 50 Islamic religious leaders backed the presidential bid Vice President Jejomar Binay for his stand against extra judicial killings.
Binay received the support of the Grand Mufti and Ustadz of Region 9 and Basulta (Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi) during their meeting in Zamboanga City Saturday.
The Vice President stressed that he was against candidates whose platforms promote fighting crimes with violence and cautioned the group that a vote for Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would not bring peace to Mindanao.
“We Muslims and Christians have the moral responsibility not to vote for Duterte,” Binay, the standard bearer of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), said. He explained that Mindanao needs a decisive and compassionate leader.
“It is my priority agenda that we will continue talking and work for lasting peace here in this part of Mindanao,” he said.
“We will always pursue peace. I will talk with anybody and continue negotiations. Efforts to pass the BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law) will not be wasted because even if it was not passed by Congress, it will be part of my working paper in our dialogues,” he added.
Binay has earlier assailed Duterte for supporting acts of violence against Davao City’s poor residents suspected of committing crimes.
Duterte has boasted to “being the Davao Death Squad (DDS)” and admitted to the media his involvement in the killing of 1,700 people.
