Italy keglers shine in World Games


Italy grabbed the overall title in the prestigious 2013 World Games bowling competition held at the Bowling Coliseum in Cali, Colombia. The Italians finished with 18 golds, 13 silvers and 18 bronzes followed by Russia (17-23-13), France (16-11-13), Germany (15-7-8), China (14-6-2), US (11-4-4), Ukraine (9-10-9), Colombia (8-13-10), Great Britain (6-6-3) and Taiwan (5-5-8).

Filipino keglers Kenneth Chua and Liza del Rosario both ended up 13th overall in the singles event.

Chua collected 1,351 (195, 266, 246, 223, 210, 209) in the first block and 1,324 (194, 278, 244, 234, 169, 205) in the second block then added his 1,329 output in the mixed doubles event for a total score of 4,004 pins in the men’s division.

For her part, del Rosario tallied 3,691 on 1,264 (255, 237, 173, 246, 166, 187) in the first block, 1,151 (226, 182, 172, 158, 191, 222) in the second block, and 1,276 in the doubles play in the women’s category.

Gold medalist Osku Palermaa of Finland, silver medalist Mads Sanbaekken of Norway and bronze medalist Hwang Dongjun of South Korea dominated the men’s singles while Daria Kovalova of Ukraine, Kelly Kulick of US and Karen Marcano of Venezuela took the top three spots in the women’s class.

The Philippine contingent will be going home with one bronze from Dennis Orcollo (men’s 9-ball pool singles).
