ITF Challenger fires off Jan 18


Top tennis players will see action in the International Tennis Federation tournament from January 18 to 23 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila.

The prize pool is at $75,000. The biggest cash reward for local tournament.

Local players including Alberto Lim Jr. And Jeson Patrombon will join the tournament.

Also playing in the ITF Challenger are international tennis players Radu Albot, Andrea Arnaboldi, Nikolos Basilashvili, Kimmer Koppejans, Tatsuma Ito, Go Soeda, Yuichi Sugita, Italian Luca Vanni, Somdev Devvarman and Jared Donaldson.

The tournament is organized by Jean Henri Lhuiller’s Sports Events Entertainment Management Inc. which aims to promote tennis tournaments in the country.

Lhuiller, also, is the chairman of Philippine Tennis Association.

In 2015, the country hosted two ITF meets at Valle Verde Country Club and Philippine Columbian Association (PCA) with $15,000 at stake.

The PCA Open was bannered by Enrique Lopez-Perez of Spain in the singles category while Filipino bets Francis Alcantara and Johnny Arcilla won in the doubles category.

Only in 1991 did the Philippines hosted an ITF tournament with high cash prize amounting to $50,000.

ITF, founded in 1913, is the governing body for world tennis composed of 210 national tennis associations or corresponding organizations of independent countries or territories.
