THE national junior chess team collected one gold, three silver and three bronze medals in the standard event of the 2013 Asean Age Group Chess Championships on Thursday in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
Alekhine Nouri scored a total of eight points after nine rounds to claim the top spot in the boys’ Under-8 category. He defeated Luvsandorj Orgilbold of Mongolia in the final round.
Alcon John Datu and FIDE Master (FM) Haridas Pascua, on the other hand, chipped in silver and bronze, respectively, in the Open Under-20 division.
Datu, Pascua and compatriot International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia were actually in a three-way tie for second with six points each. But Datu and Pascua made it to the podium by virtue of their higher tiebreak points, relegating Garcia to the fourth position.
Vietnamese FM Nguyen Van Hai ruled the event with 7.5 points.
Samantha Glo Revita added one silver medal in the girls’ Under-14 class. Revita and Nguyen Thi Minh Thu of Vietnam were also tied on top with seven points each. But the Vietnamese took the first-place honors because of superior tiebreak points.
Also winning silver medal was Shania Mae Mendoza in the girls’ Under-16 while Allaney Jia Doroy (girls’ Under-12) and FM Paulo Bersamina (boys’ Under-16) contributed bronze medals in their respective categories.
