Some 35 members of the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) arrived on Wednesday afternoon at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport as part of Japan Disaster Relief (JDR) team.
Japan Embassy officials who met them at the airport said the Self-Defense Forces team will be conducting medical assistance in the central Philippines, “in response to the immense damaged caused by typhoon Yolanda.”
The team, consisting of doctors, nurses and medical assistants, was scheduled to fly to Tacloban and to other provinces.
A Japan embassy official said they are still waiting for the go signal, saying that the JSDF have to wait for schedules in order to fly to the central Philippines.
He said that another disaster relief team is arriving in Manila on board a chartered Self-Defense Forces aircraft.
“The JSDF members are expected to conduct activities including medical assistance in the Philippines. The team will also launch its activities promptly, while assessing the conditions in the affected area,” the official added. BENJIE L. VERGARA
