• Japanese, 10 others nabbed for SIM cracking

THE Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) on Tuesday arrested a Japanese national and 10 Filipino employees of a Makati City-based firm for their involvement in a multi-million illegal Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card cracking activities in the country. PNP-ACG officers who raided TechResource Inc. located at Trafalgar Plaza in Makati seized computers, routers, telephones, SIM cards, servers, GSM gateways, laptops, CCTV cameras, cables, cellular phones and documents used by the suspects in their illegal operations. PNP-ACG Director, Senior Supt. Guillermo Lorenzo Eleazar said they acted upon the request of a telecomunications network to track down the illegal operations of the firm. It showed that the company was using a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) gateway which converts international calls to domestic calls. Experts also discovered that other SIM cards were used for Voice Over the Internet Protocol (VOIP) to cater to online audio and video calls. Arrested will be charged with System Interference or violation of RA 10175.
