Joey G. sings with his idols

Side A rolls out series of concerts with Bishop, Johnson and Puerta
Friday night saw the first outing of the Back 2 Back 2 Back concert of American music legends Stephen Bishop, Michael Johnson and Joe Puerta of Ambrosia, as well as the Philippines beloved Joey G. and the Side A

The three foreign artists were among those who created some of the most memorable sounds of the ‘70s and ‘80s, and were warmly welcomed by Manila’s music fans at a sold out show at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

On Wednesday, Bishop, Johnson and Puerta held a joint press conference with Joey G. and the Side A, where the Filipino artists acknowledged being fans of the singing superstars.

“When we started out, we would sing the songs of these amazing artists here with us today during our gigs and they truly influenced Side A’s music,” said Joey G. “It is an honor to be sharing the same stage with them for the Back 2 Back 2 Back series of concerts.”

In reply, the foreign artists jested, “We’ll just charge you for royalty later.”

The songs of Bishop have been big favorites with Filipinos for several decades and they are always excited to watch him perform live. The singer and songwriter was responsible for “On And On,” “Something New In My Life,” and “Separate Lives,” from the film White Nights, which was nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Song, plus the enchanting “It Might Be You” that was used in the soundtrack of the movie Tootsie.

Meanwhile, this is Johnson’s first time to perform in the Philippines but his songs have been favorites here for the longest time. He is the voice behind such ‘70s classics as “Bluer Than Blue,” “I’ll Always Love You,” and “Give Me Wing,” among others.

Ambrosia is generally acknowledged in the annals of pop music as one of the greatest pop/rock bands of all time and as bass player and vocalist, Joe Puerta was part of the making of the big sellers. The group’s hits include “Holding On To Yesterday,” “How Much I Feel,” and “Biggest Part Of Me.”

Finally, Side A reunites for the series of concerts with Joey Generoso, Naldy Gonzales, Ernie Severino, Lee Von Cailao and Ned Esguerra. Famous for party music and romantic ballads alike, Side A completes the lineup of songs by decade for the show with such tracks as “Hold On,” “Tuloy Pa Rin Ako,” “Forevermore,” and “Tell Me.”

Johnson, Bishop, Puerta and Side A will be at the University of Southern Philippines in Davao City on October 26; while Bishop will hold a solo concert Lagao Gym in General Santos on October 27.

Back 2 Back 2 Back is co-produced by Viva Live and Redstone Production.
