Despite the ongoing controversy behind Star Cinema pitting its summer rom-com flick Just the 3 of Us head on with Viva Film’s This Time in cinemas today, the former’s leading man John Lloyd Cruz on Sunday asked the public to support both movies.
Just before he and leading lady, GMA artist Jennylyn Mercado took to the stage of their mall show at Ayala Fairview Terraces on Sunday night, the blockbuster stars swung by a pocket interview at a nearby restaurant, sparing a half-hour from their weeklong promo blitz to answer a few questions.
Cruz and Mercado have been on a very tight schedule since the first grand press conference for the movie had been called for on April 30, and cancelled for a week later due to conflict in promo commitments. From the looks of things, Star Cinema is making sure their prized actors get to reach out to as many fans via live appearances and TV guestings on both networks, because despite their stature as box-office stars, JaDine fans are known to be very competitive whenever any kind of competition—intended or inadvertent—comes their idols’ way.
Nevertheless, Cruz, who has always been considered a very diplomatic figure in showbiz despite his age said at his interview, “Sana lahat sila manood ng Just the 3 of Us and pati na din yung This Time ni JaDine [James Reid and Nadine Lustre].”
For him, Cruz explained that having two Filipino movies of the same genre competing with each other is actually a good sign that the industry is thriving.
“Isa lang naman ang sinasabi noon na buhay na buhay ang industriya ngayon para magkasabay-sabay yung playdate ng mga pelikula ngayon,” he related.
Outside the Star Cinema vs. Viva Films competition—considered a controversy because the two movie outfits often co-produce blockbuster titles together—the pairing of two big stars from ABS-CBN and GMA Network in Just the 3 of Us is of course the biggest draw of the movie. Cruz, considered the ultimate leading man whether in rom-coms or dramatic love stories, and Mercado, 2014 and 2015’s breakout star for box office hits English Only Please and Walang Forever, respectively.
Directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and, with a script developed and written by the collaboration of Kiko Abrillo, Gillian Ebreo, Katherine Labayen, and Vanessa Valdez, Just The 3 Of US is centered on an unlikely love story between polar opposites Uno (Cruz), a pilot and CJ (Mercado), a flight attendant—two strangers, and how one night changes their lives forever.
