COMBINED Navy and Coast Guard forces have intercepted an estimated P3 million worth of suspected smuggled rice while patrolling off this city, the police reported on Wednesday.
Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) information officer Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca said the apprehension was made at about 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday.
Huesca said the joint Navy and Coast Guard operatives were conducting patrol when they spotted M/L Anraiza skippered by Kee Dugasan.
The wooden-hulled ferry is owned by Hadja Nur-in Sain of Zone 3, Barangay Tulay, Jolo, Sulu.
Upon inspection, Huesca said it was discovered the ferry was loaded with more or less 3,000 sacks of rice of 25 kilos each that came from Jolo, Sulu.
Dugasan failed to present documents involving the rice shipment, Huesca said.
The joint Navy and Coast Guard operatives escorted M/L Anraiza to the local wharf where an inventory of the cargo is being conducted prior to its turn over to the Bureau of Customs (BoC), he said. PNA
