Veteran journalist Floreno Grimaldo Solmirano, 71, of Marinduque and Legazpi City died of stroke Monday at the Albay Doctors Hospital in Legazpi City. He is the Bicol Bureau head of the Philippine News Agency. Solmirano was the public affairs chief of Private Development Corp. of the Philippines and became PDCP Legazpi branch manager during the early 80’s. In 1990, he became publisher-editor of Bicolandia Times until 1994 while a Correspondent for the Manila Standard. He later joined the Philippine Daily Inquirer as Southern Luzon Bureau Chief until he retired in 2010. He then joined the Philippine News Agency in 2001, according to his close friend Manuel Ugalde, president of the Bicol Correspondents League (Bicol). He is survived by his wife Irene Abarquez-Solmirano, sons Floreno Jr., and lawyer F-Alfoncino. Solmirano’s remain lies at the St. Peter Funeral Homes at Barangay Bogtong, Legazpi City. Interment will be announced later.
