• Judge inhibits from murder case

DAVAO CITY: The new judge who is supposed to handle the murder case filed against former Davao del Sur Gov. Douglas Cagas inhibited herself only two days after the case was re-raffled and assigned to her.

Judge Magnolia Velez of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 20 chose to inhibit because of her supposed affinity to the family of Cagas, the alleged brains in the 2010 murder of Digos City journalist Nestor Bedolido.

Caesar Europa, the counsel of Bedolido, said he learned about the decision on Wednesday morning.

The murder case filed against Cagas, Matanao town mayor Vicente Fernandez and two others was re-raffled off on Monday after RTC Judge Carmelita Davin inhibited from the case for still unknown reasons.

Europa said the case will now be forwarded to the Supreme Court because there are only two courts in Digos City.

“The Court Administrator will decide on who will handle the case,” Europa said.

In August, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima ordered the filing of the murder charge against Cagas, Fernandez, Bado Sanchez and Ali Ordaneza.

Confessed gunman Voltaire Mirafuentes and his brother, Henry implicated Cagas and the other suspects in the murder of Bedolido.
