Even if controversy will always be associated with her famous last name, it doesn’t mean she cannot rise above it.
Julia Barretto, the beautiful 17-year-old daughter of actress-turned-politico Marjorie Barretto and ex-husband Dennis Padilla, passed a tricky test with flying colors this week at the grand press conference of her upcoming teleserye Mira Bella, which is also her first lead role in a drama series.
In front of the entire entertainment press corps, Julia was asked whose footsteps she would like to follow between her two famous aunts Gretchen and Claudine Barretto, who were soap and movie stars at the height of their respective careers.
Of course, everyone knew that the pair of sisters is in the thick of a bitter and often highly publicized feud, so much so that silence fell on the gathering, while waiting for her reply.
The newest member of the beautiful Barretto clan to join showbiz was impressively unruffled by the question, and answered with ease and dignity: “Kung career po ang pag-uusapan, kay Tita Claudine po because I’m such a fan of her teleseryes; on a personal level, I want to be like Tita Gretchen in everyway because everything is fabulous about her!”
For her simple and honest reply, Julia earned a round of applause from the usually unforgiving members of the showbiz press, whom the smart young lady left with no choice but to focus on her TV show.
Mira Bella is dubbed as “ABS-CBN’s official summer teleserye” and pairs the fast rising teen actress with one of the network’s favorite prime time leading men Enrique Gil.
Premiering Monday night, the story revolves around the plight of Mira (Julia), a young girl who inherited a curse when she was born with skin that feels and looks like wood.
Despite being mocked and ridiculed throughout her childhood, Mira grows up believing in the goodness of people because of the love of her foster parents, Osang (Pokwang) and Paeng (John “Sweet” Lapus).
A different kind of love comes to her life when she meets Jeremy (Enrique Gil), whom she hopes will see her inner beauty rather than her unusual appearance.
Adding star power to the cast of Mira Bella are Sam Concepcion, Mylene Dizon, James Blanco, Liza Diño, DJ Durano, Mika dela Cruz, Arlene Muhlach, Alora Sasam, and Gloria Diaz, with the special participation of Dimples Romana.
The series is directed by Erick Salud, Jojo Saguin and Jerome Pobocan, and created by Dreamscape Entertainment Television for ABS-CBN.
Mira Bella premieres on March 24 on ABS-CBN’s Primetime Bida. For more information, log on to the show’s official social media accounts at Facebook.com/MiraBellaOnline and Twitter.com/MiraBellaOnline.
