SENATOR Joseph Victor Ejercito is hoping independent presidential aspirant Senator Grace Poe will support the re-election bid of his mother, San Juan City Mayor Guia Gomez.
Gomez will be challenged by incumbent Vice Mayor Francis Zamora, who is related to Poe’s husband.
Ejercito said it would be a “big deal” for them if Poe would choose to endorse his mother, who is seeking a third term as mayor of San Juan.
According to the senator, Poe’s husband Neil Llamanzares is related to the wife of Zamora.
“I don’t want to put Sen. Grace on the spot, since she has her own campaign to take care of,” said Ejercito. “But her endorsement will be a big thing for us.”
He at the same time expressed doubts on the sincerity of the Zamoras, who, during the 2004 presidential elections, chose to support the presidential bid of then Senator Panfilo Lacson instead of Poe’s father, the late Fernando Poe Jr.
Ejercito said the Zamoras were the main funders and supporters of Lacson in 2004, and that if there was really a strong relation between the Zamoras and the Poes, the former should have supported the presidential bid of Poe instead of Lacson.
“It would show that they (Zamoras) have a history of turning their back on their supposed relatives,” the senator said.
Zamora’s father, House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora, has expressed support to the presidential bid of Poe and was even among those who showed up early during Poe’s declaration at the Bahay ng Alumni last month.
Ejercito expressed confidence that his mother would win the mayoral race. He said his only concern is the city’s current political situation where their rivals have resorted to traditional and patronage politics.
Aside from the face-off of Mayor Gomez and Vice Mayor Zamora in 2016, Jana Ejercito, cousin of Senators Ejercito and Jose “Jinggoy” Estrada, will be challenging the vice mayor’s father, who is seeking reelection in Congress.
Likewise, Janella Estrada, daughter of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, will be facing San Juan City Councilor Totoy Bernardo, the running mate of Zamora in the vice mayoral race.
