KALIBO, Aklan: The town of Kalibo is pushing to acquire a cityhood status despite the short population and land area requirement. Data by the Philippine Statistical Authority (PSA) released recently showed Kalibo has only 80,605 residents, way beyond the cityhood requirement of at least 150,000 residents. Mayor William Lachica said despite this, the Aklan Congressional District Office is bent on pushing for cityhood. Aside from the population dilemma, Kalibo is also short of land area size which is also a requirement. “Maybe we could be considered a component city,” Lachica said. Kalibo is a gateway to premier island destination Boracay. Congressman-elect Carlito Marquez said he is pushing for the cityhood of Kalibo and a bill to divide Aklan into two provincial districts.
