Jordan Mintah and Robert Lopez Mendy powered Kaya FC-Makati to a 2-0 victory over JPV Marikina FC in the Philippines Football League (PFL) on Sunday at the University of Makati Football Stadium.
Mintah and Mendy struck in the second half as Kaya Makati climbed to No. 3 with its third home win and sixth overall for a total of 20 points.
“I’m very happy with the win. All the players performed well. They responded to the plan before the game,” said Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida, whose squad stretched its winning streak to three.
“Playing a tough team in JPV and having a good result like this will really be a motivating factor for Kaya,” he added.
JPV Marikina suffered its second straight setback after a five-game winning run as it fell to No. 5 with 18 points.
The home side ran aggressive in the early goings, creating scoring chances and almost winning a penalty kick twice.
Following a scoreless first half, the Makati booters’ hardwork finally paid off in the hour mark when Ghanaian forward Mintah finely controlled a pass from Adam Reed and sent a low shot past goalkeeper Felipe Tripulac.
Mendy notched the second goal as the Senegalese striker sprung on a sloppy clearance by a JPV defender before firing a shot from outside the box in the 81st minute.
In the day’s other game, Ilocos United FC and Stallion Laguna FC settled for a 1-1 draw in an abandoned match of bottom teams at the President Elpidio Quirino Stadium in Bantay, Ilocos Sur.
Ilocos United’s Chima Uzoka and Stallion Laguna’s Jhan Melliza scored for their respective clubs as the game was called off in halftime due to deteriorating field conditions.
