Kaya-FC Makati and FC Meralco Manila battle for the top spot in the second Metro Manila derby of the Philippines Football League (PFL) today at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.
The capital region’s powerhouse clubs clash for the second time in the opening season at 7 p.m.
Holding the pole position with 27 points and a six-goal edge in goal difference, Kaya Makati tries to get the maximum points and break away from its regional rival.
The Makati-based booters gained the solo leadership after cruising to a record-tying five-game winning streak and settling for a 1-1 draw with the resurgent Stallion Laguna FC at the Biñan Football Stadium last Sunday.
Kaya head coach Noel Marcaida looks forward to the second staging of the rivalry in the capital region.
“Kaya versus Meralco is about the pride of the clubs and the cities. The team that works better collectively will get the result,” said Marcaida.
Meralco Manila, a consistent dweller on the top two spots so far, goes for another attempt to reclaim the lead.
The Sparks, who played minus stalwarts Phil and James Younghusband for the first time, squandered the chance to reclaim the No. 1 position as they absorbed a 1-2 loss to Global Cebu FC at the Rizal Memorial pitch three days back.
Although it would be difficult to pick up the pieces following the departure of the Younghusband brothers, Meralco head coach Aris Caslib believes his men can step up to the occasion.
“Everyone knew that it (coping up with Younghusbands’ departure) is a step by step process. We have to rebuild. That’s the most important thing,” said Caslib.
In their first encounter, Meralco prevailed over Kaya, 2-0, at the University of Makati Football Stadium last June 17.
Meanwhile, Global Cebu FC guns for its eighth win when it hosts cellar-dweller Ilocos United FC at the Cebu City Sports Center at 4 p.m.
