Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers will begin their first training camp together on July 30.
The head coach will begin to gather information to ultimately make what could be the most important decision of his tenure. Kelly must decide between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback position.
Former 49ers coach Mike Nolan provided his input on the competition.
“I think the (storyline) to watch is Chip Kelly and the San Francisco 49ers and how he manages that quarterback situation,” Nolan told the NFL Network. “Obviously he’s got two quarterbacks in Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert, who he’s picking from. Personally, I think Kaepernick’s the better choice.”
Nolan is not alone in that opinion. Many observers have said Kelly’s offensive style is tailor-made for Kaepernick’s skill set. The read-option style is suited for Kaepernick’s athleticism and could herald the quarterback’s return to greatness after a disastrous season in 2015.
Kaepernick, who was limited in offseason workouts and OTAs while rehabbing from surgeries on his left shoulder, right thumb and left knee, is expected to be fully cleared in time for training camp.
“I think he fulfills all of what Chip Kelly’s offense utilizes,” Nolan said. “So I think he’d be the best choice. But I think that’s something to watch closely.” TNS
