Kelly wins URCC ‘Uprising’ superfight


FILIPINO mixed martial arts fighter Eric “The Natural” Kelly beat Chinese Jianbo Lu via first-round submission to bag the Superfight title of the Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) 24 Uprising at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday.

Kelly, who loss his One Fighting Championship featherweight belt to fellow Filipino Honorio Banario last year, dominated the fight using superior grappling techniques to nullify the Chinese fighter’s strong kicks to his body.

Kelly finally caught Jianbo with an armbar and forced the Chinese to tap out.

In a message posted on his Facebook account, Kelly (10-1 win-loss log) said: “Thanks God for giving me a favor to win last night. Thank you MuayFit and all the gyms that I crosstrain like Tribal Submission, Fight Corps, Altitude Gym, Team Torogi and BAMF MMA gym. Thank you coach Cricket Gazmin.”

Meanwhile, Igor Subora retained his URCC heavyweight title by scoring a first-round technical knockout against Marcus Valda, a gold medalist in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling events of the Southeast Asian Games. Valda’s defense crumbled against Subora’s punching blitz.

Red Romero defeated Ricardo Sapno for the URCC featherweight title using a rear naked choke in the third round.

In the other bouts, Adrian Hillana nipped Ali Khatibi through a rear naked choke in the first round, Roy Doliguez defeated Franklin Donglay via split decision while Reysaldo Transmonte also won via split decision vs. Andrew Benibe.
