Filipino-Chinese actor Ken Chan’s acting credentials are about to get a major boost. The 22-year-old GMA Network talent, who has mostly appeared in teen TV tandems since joining show business in 2011, bagged the title role of a transsexual woman in the upcoming afternoon drama series Destiny Rose.

For those wondering if the young man is deserving, and more importantly up to the challenge, of a very unique character, it will be quite impressive to know that Ken participated in a series of auditions and actually bagged the role. According to network executives, “He delivered a string of thrilling and convincing performances all throughout, making him the perfect choice for the role to become Joey Flores Vergara.”

In a heart-warming tale of love and family, Joey Flores Vergara is a transsexual woman—a woman trapped in a man’s body—who pursues her dreams into becoming an influential writer.

All his life, Joey only dreamt and hoped to be the best for his parents. Despite the fact that everyone around him was against his personal desires and wishes, he remained a loving and obedient child.

As the story evolves, Joey will go through different setbacks in life yet will continue to be patient and understanding. His positive qualities will outweigh his challenges, as he becomes a stronger person in her new life as Destiny Rose.

Making the plot more interesting is the chiselled Fabio Ide who portrays the role of Gabriele Antonioni, Joey’s Fil-Italian penpal. He will make Joey and Destiny Rose’s life more colorful as he becomes her one true love.

Completing the cast of this fresh TV concept are Manilyn Reynes as Daisy Flores Vergara, Joey’s loving mother; Michael de Mesa as Rosauro Armani Vitto, a rich philanthropist who will be instrumental in Joey’s transition in becoming a woman; and Jackielou Blanco as Dahlia, Jasmine’s mother who will make Joey and Daisy’s life difficult. Completing the support cast are Katrina Halili, Sheena Halili, Jeric Gonzales, Joko Diaz, Irma Adlawan, JC Tiuseco, and Ken Alfonso.

Ken, who led the cast of Destiny Rose in a press conference on September 8, said he sought the advice of transgender women in tackling his role to make it as realistic as he possibly can.

“Marami ako natutunan sa kanila, lalo na sa mga buhay-buhay. And physically, marami din akong natutunan sa kanila. Naging mas mas maarte ako sa katawan lalo na sa pagda-diet ko. I eat healthy dahil si Destiny Rose dapat maging payat, maging babae,” he began.

More importantly, the young actor whose patience in getting his big break in showbiz, believes the series will do more than just entertain televiewers about the life of Destiny Rose.

“Naniniwla ako na ang Destiny Rose ay magiging instrumento para buksan ang iba pang mga isip lalo na dito sa Pilipinas, na buksan ang isip nila sa same-sex marriage, sa LGBT, para magkaroon ng equality.”

Directed by Don Michael Perez, Destiny Rose is written by the team of head writer Luningning Interino-Ribay. It will air Monday to Friday beginning September 14 after Buena Familia on GMA Afternoon Prime.
