BAUANG, La Union: One of the alleged killers of Bacnotan, La Union Councilor Onofre Almojuela, who was gunned to death on his way home in March last year, was arrested by members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Region 1 on Friday.
It was not an easy arrest as suspect Robert Cardenas resisted and even tried to shoot it out with the arresting policemen inside the Cesmin Beach Re-sort in Barangay Pagdalagan, Bauang, La Union.
Cardenas was shot in the shoulder.
Senior Supt. Francisco Es-guerra, CIDG-1 regional chief, said his office has been on a manhunt for Cardenas, who is a notorious gun-for-hire, since last year. His last known address was Butubot Norte, Balaoan, La Union.
Esguerra added that they confiscated from the suspect a caliber .45 pistol with nine bullets in it.
“A joint police team went to implement the warrant of arrest after the suspect was sighted in the area. However, when the team went near him, he immediately grabbed his gun. One of the policemen was quick to shoot, hitting him on the shoulder,” he said.
The suspect was rushed to the nearby Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Esguerra said Cardenas was one of the suspects who was riding a motorcycle when the ambush on Al-mojuela was done last year. The late town councillor was driving a van on his way home in Barangay Mabaneng-beng, Bacnotan town.
Judge Carlito Corpuz of the Regional Trial Court Brach 27 in San Fernando City has long issued the warrant of arrest against Cardenas and his cohorts.
The arresting team was composed of the La Union provincial intelligence branch, Bauang and Bacnotan police stations, La Union provincial public safety company, the CIDG and the La Union investigation and detective management division.
Aside from the murder, charges for illegal possession of firearms and resisting arrest will be filed against the suspect.
