Character actress Katrina Halili admits she is very happy with her latest TV project where she will play one of the main protagonists in the upcoming primetime series, Niño on GMA Network.
The 28-year-old actress will portray the role of Hannah, the kind-hearted mother of Niño whose coveted role has been given to teen talent Miguel Tanfelix.
Katrina says she could not help but feel excited over portraying a good girl role on her next soap because it will give her a breather from being typecast as a villain.
“Nakaka-excite kasi iba naman. Nabigyan ulit ako ng chance dahil panibagong character na naman ito. Sana mabigyan ko ng justice yung role ko sa Niño para makita ng mga tao na kaya kong gumawa ng iba, at hindi lahat ng roles ay kontrabida ako. Medyo sanay na ako na lagi na lang maldita. Sa sobrang nasanay na ako mag-kontrabida, parang nagsawa na ako,” the feisty actress confesses at the photo shoot of the new show.
Katrina recalls that it was in 2008 when she first played a protagonist via the hit sine novela, Magdusa Ka. Six years have gone by, which is why she is very grateful to her network for entrusting her with a project that can finally showcase her versatility.
“Thankful ako nung natanggap ko ito. Sabi ko kay Direk Maryo [J. delos Reyes], ‘Alam niyo, ito po talaga yung gusto kong role.’ ‘Wow, answered prayer,’ sabi niya. Sabi ko, ‘Oo nga po Direk. Kaya kinakabahan ako at nape-pressure ako.”
Katrina is of course delighted to be working again with the multi-award winning director. Niño will be her fifth project with Direk Maryo after Magdusa Ka (2008), Rosalinda (2009), Munting Heredera (2011), and Magkano Ba Ang Pag-ibig? (2013).
She adds that it is always a privilege to work with Direk Maryo who is very professional on and off screen. She has learned many things from the respected director who always reminds her of the value of good work ethics even in show business.
“Hindi mawawala yung takot ko kay Direk Maryo,” Katrina laughs. “Every take, kahit sabihin mo na OK na kami ni Direk, pagdating ng blocking, may makikita pa rin siya. Lahat pinapansin niya. Ganoon siya ka-professional sa trabaho. At kahit sa totoong buhay, sinasabihan din niya ako. Kaya masaya ako na makatrabaho siya.”
Katrina further shares she is thrilled to be cast across prime time star Tom Rodriguez in the series.
“First time ko siyang makakatrabaho at nakaka-excite na makatrabaho siya. Nanonood kasi ako ng My Husband’s Lover at fan ako nung show nila.”
In the program, Tom plays the role of Jonathan, Niño’s hardworking father and
Hannah’s husband. The story is anchored on good family values and positive messages about love, faith and hope that will encourage and inspire viewers, most especially the young, to become loving and optimistic in life.
“Maganda yung story because it will give hope sa mga tao. Na pag may darating sa ating problema, may darating ding solusyon.”
Also cast in the show, whose premiere is yet to be announced, are Lotlot De Leon, Neil Ryan Sese, German Moreno, Dante Rivero, Bianca Umali, Gerald Napoles, Ces Quesada, Luz Valdez, Renz Valerio, Julian Trono, Vincent Magbanua, and Gloria Romero.
