Letran College aims for revenge when it clashes against reigning champion San Beda College at the start of the best-of-three finals of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 91 men’s basketball tournament on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Game 1 begins at 4 p.m.
The Knights, who are aiming for their 17th title, are expected seek vengeance against the Red Lions who defeated them during the 2013 championship series. Letran then was under the tutelage of its former coach Caloy Garcia.
But the Knights’ rookie coach Aldin Ayo from Sorsogon said that his words are not focusing on anything else but to win this year’s championship and foil the Red Lions’ attempt to bag its sixth straight championship crown.
“We are not going to settle for anything less but for the title,” Ayo, a first timer in the finals, told The Manila Times in an interview. “I’m very confident that we can make it this time. We just have to prepare and give our best against San Beda.”
“We were belittled this season and I’m hoping we use that as our motivation to win the title.”
The Knights are expected to lean on veteran playmaker Mark Cruz, forward Kevin Racal, Rey Nambatac, Jomari Sollano and Kier Quinto, among others in their battle against the Red Lions.
Letran earned the twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four after placing No. 2 in the elimination round with 13-5 win-loss record.
They defeated Mapua to reach the Finals on Tuesday while the Red Lions beat the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers for the last finals slot.
