Leading teams Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas will face each other today in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Knights and the Altas, both bearing 4-0 records will clash at 4 p.m. while five-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions will face the College of Saint Benilde Blazers at 2 p.m.
In the high school division, the Saint Benilde-La Salle Greenhills Greenies will battle six-peat titlist San Beda Red Cubs at 10 p.m. followed by the game between the Perpetual Help Altalettes against the Letran Squires at 12 noon.
Coach Aldin Ayo of Letran hopes to capitalize on their 82-76 triumph over the San Sebastian Stags on Tuesday. The Knights were down by 13 points, 53-66, in the last 8:52 of the game but six triples allowed to post a come-from-behind victory.
In addition to a strong 4-0 start, being the first team to beat five-peat champion San Beda Red Lions, 93-80, on July 16, bolstered Letran’s confidence.
But the Knights would be facing a formidable Altas now fortified by the presence of top players Earl Scottie Thompson, Bright Osagie Akhuetie and Prince Eze.
The 6’1 Thompson averaged 14 points, 12.25 rebounds and 9.25 assists a game. The Nigerian rookie import Akhuettie is now the league’s top scorer with 24.25 points a game and no.2 in rebounding with 15.25 per game. The 6’11 Eze, on the other hand, also a Nigerian, is no. 9 in players’ average value (PAV) with 11.33 points, 9.33 rebounds and 2.67 block shots a game.
In the other game, a win by the Red Lions over the Blazers would enable San Beda to claim a share of second spot with the losers of the Letran vs. Perpetual Help match.
