La Salle battles UST for twice-to-beat edge

De La Salle University eyes a playoff for the second twice-to-beat advantage when it battles University of Santo Tomas (UST) today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Green Archers clash with the Growling Tigers at 4 p.m.

La Salle is in third with a 9-4 card behind National University (NU) and Far Eastern University (FEU), which hold identical 10-4 cards.

UST occupies the No. 4 pot with 7-5 while defending champion Ateneo de Manila University dropped to fifth with 7-6.

If La Salle wins against UST, there will be a three-way tie on top with NU taking the No. 1 seeding. La Salle and FEU will battle in a playoff for the No. 2 position.

But if La Salle loses, FEU gets the top seeding while NU will be in the No. 2 spot base on quotient system. The top two teams after the elimination round get twice-to-beat advantage.

The Green Archers are coming off an impressive six game winning streak including their 57-55 victory over NU last Sunday.

Sophomore Jeron Teng is expected to showcase another sterling performance along with Almond Vosotros, Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres and rookie Jason Perkins.

The Growling Tigers, on the other hand, are raring to earn a return trip to the Final Four. Cameroonian Karim Abdul, Kevin Ferrer and Aljon Mariano must step up anew along with Clark Bautista and Ed Daquioag. Team captain Jeric Teng is still a doubtful starter after suffering shoulder injury.

Meanwhile, Adamson University (4-9) and University of the East (5-7) are just looking to improve their current records when they face each other in the 2 p.m. opening game.     Standings
