• La Salle claims fifth-straight victory in UAAP volleyball

Former champion De La Salle University survived the gutsy stand of Far Eastern University (FEU), 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, to stay unblemished in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan City.

La Salle posted its fifth-straight win to take the solo lead, leaving reigning titlist Ateneo de Manila University in the No. 2 position with a 4-0 card. FEU fell to 2-3.

Skipper Ara Galang had 23 points for the Lady Spikers.

Earlier, University of the Philippines (UP) nailed its second win by nipping University of the East (UE), 25-14, 25-19, 25-16.

Middle blocker Katherine Bersola led the Lady Maroons with 12 points including four blocks while Angeli Araneta added 11 points and team captain Nicole Tiamzon contributed 10.

    UP improved to 2-3.

The Lady Warriors, on the other hand, absorbed their fifth-straight loss to remain the only team without a win. Shaya Adorador had 10 points for UE and Leuseht Dawis got seven.

In the men’s division, defending champion National University (NU) extended its unbeaten slate to five following its 25-15, 25-23, 25-22 victory over UE.

Former Best Spiker and Finals Most Valuable Player (MVP) Peter Torres powered the Bulldogs with 10 hits and four blocks.

Last year’s runner-up Ateneo also had an easy sailing as it swept La Salle, 26-24, 25-15, 25-23, with reigning MVP Marck Espejo leading the charge with 16 points. Ateneo now has a 3-2 card as La Salle dropped to 1-4.
