• La Salle drops UE in UAAP women’s volley


    Defending champion De La Salle University mauled University of the East, 25-12, 25-18, 25-20, to complete a sweet sweep of the first round on Wednesday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

    La Salle strengthened its hold of the top spot with a clean 7-0 mark followed by National University (6-1) and last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University (5-2). UE, in contrast, has a 0-7 card.

    Reigning co-Most Valuable Player Ara Galang powered the Lady Archers with 13 points on 11 attacks and a couple of aces while rookie Desiree Cheng contributed eight, Abigail Marano delivered six.

    The Lady Warriors got a combined 19-point showing from skipper Sarina Bulan and rookie Shaya Adorador.

    La Salle earned extra 25 points on UE’s errors. It also got a total of eight aces and six blocks and had sterling 26 excellent sets compared to UE’s eight successful sets.

    In the men’s division, Ateneo stunned former titlist University of Santo Tomas, 25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-15. Marck Jesus Espejo led te Blue Eagles with 21 points while Neil Patrick Flores and Rex Intal added 10 apiece.

    Adamson University also needed an extra set to beat La Salle, 25-19, 25-18, 23-25, 25-23. Michael Sudaria had 19 points for the Soaring Falcons.
