De La Salle University guns for a share of lead when it faces University of Santo Tomas (UST) today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Spikers-Tigresses match is at 4 p.m.
La Salle holds the No. 2 spot with a 5-1 card behind solo leader and defending champion Ateneo de Manila University (6-1).
The Lady Spikers snapped the Lady Eagles’ 24-game winning streak via an impressive 25-22, 25-14, 25-18 victory on Saturday led by veteran setter Kim Fajardo, middle hitter Mika Reyes and former Most Valuable Player Ara Galang.
“Kami naman kahit sino ang kalaban namin pinaghahandaan namin. Lalaro lang kami hindi namin iniisip kung sino ang kalaban,” said Fajardo.
The Tigresses, on the other hand, have been struggling in their last two games including against University of the Philippines (UP) when they surrendered a 19-25, 18-25, 25-16, 30-32 decision,
With the loss, UST dropped to seventh with a 2-4 mark.
Cherry Ann Rondina and EJ Laure were delivering huge numbers for UST but the two open spikers needed support from veteran opposite hitter Carmela Tunay, and middle blockers Jessey De Leon and Ria Meneses.
In the first game, UP will be colliding with National University (NU) at 2 p.m.
The Lady Maroons and the Lady Bulldogs are sharing the fourth spot with identical 3-3.
NU pins its hopes on Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo, Jorelle Singh and Jasmine Nabor while Lady Maroons will be relying on Katherine Bersola, Isa Molde, Diana Carlos and Nicole Tiamzon.
In the men’s division, La Salle meets UST at 8 a.m. followed by the tussle between NU and Far Eastern University at 10 a.m.
