De La Salle University and Far Eastern University (FEU) will be disputing the last finals slot in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament today at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The rubber match between the Lady Spikers and the Lady Tamaraws is at 4 p.m.
FEU forced a do-or-die game after scoring a 15-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 16-14 come-from-behind win against La Salle on Sunday behind the efforts of Bernadeth Pons, Remy Palma and Toni Rose Basas.
Pons had 22 points, Palma nailed 18 and Basas added 17 as FEU erased the twice-to-beat edge of La Salle. The troika also delivered all of FEU’s six aces.
The Lady Tamaraws were impressive on defense with 102 excellent digs including 38 from libero Kyla Atienza and 15 from Basas, way better than the 83 digs delivered by the Lady Spikers.
“La Salle is a veteran team. We’re expecting a big comeback but we’re ready. We are prepared and we’re ready to give it all on Wednesday,” said Lady Tamaraws mentor Shaq Delos Santos.
La Salle, on the other hand, wants to bounce back to keep its title bid alive with open spiker Ara Galang, middle blocker Mika Reyes and setter Kim Fajardo leading the charge.
“We want to move on. It’s [losing]part of our life. We just need to pick up ourselves and bounce back from that loss,” stressed Reyes.
Besides the three graduating players, La Salle will also bank on utility spiker Kim Dy and middle hitter Mary Joy Baron as well as Cyd Demecillo and defensive gem Dawn Macandili.
The winner in the La Salle-FEU game will advance to the best-of-three finals against defending champion Ateneo de Manila University.
The Lady Eagles bagged the first finals berth by ousting a rookie-laden University of the Philippines’ side in the other Final Four pairing.
In the men’s division, National University battles Adamson University at 2 p.m. for the last finals ticket.
