Former titlist De La Salle University and National University (NU) will be disputing the second finals berth when the second stage of the stepladder semifinals unfolds today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
The game is set at 4 p.m.
The Lady Spikers hold a twice-to-beat advantage. They just need to win once against the Lady Bulldogs to arrange a rematch against defending champion Ateneo de Manila University. The Lady Eagles have already secured the first finals slot after sweeping the elimination round.
La Salle has a 2-0 edge against NU this season but there’s no room for complacency according to Lady Spikers head coach Ramil De Jesus as the Lady Bulldogs displayed solid games in their last two outings.
Team captain Ara Galang along with veteran hitters Cyd Demecillo, Mika Reyes and setter Kim Fajardo are expected to lead the Lady Spikers.
NU, on the other hand, made it to the second stage of the stepladder after ousting Far Eastern University, 25-13, 25-17, 25-27, 25-23, on Saturday.
The towering Jaja Santiago and former Best Spiker Myla Pablo will be the main source of strength of the Lady Bulldogs. Rookie Jorelle Singh, Rizza Mandapat, Desiree Dadang and playmaker Jocelyn Soliven must also contribute to force a rubber match against the Lady Spikers.
Meanwhile, the Game 1 of the men’s best-of-three championship showdown between reigning titlist NU and top seed Ateneo is scheduled at 2 p.m.
