La Salle routs UP, nears twice-to-beat

De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Archers held a tight grip on the second spot after trouncing the University of the Philippines (UP) Lady Maroons, 65-48, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Saturday.

Khate Castillo poured in 22 points while Snow Peñaranda added 13 points and 10 rebounds as La Salle move within a win of clinching the No. 2 University of the East, behind Ruthlaine Tacula’s 19 points, bested Adamson University, 66-55, in the other match to keep its slim hopes alive for the twice-to-beat semis incentive.

The second-running Lady Archers improved to 10-3 card, still a full game ahead of the Lady Warriors, who hold a 9-4 record in third spot.

De La Salle will go for the semifinals bonus with a victory over Ateneo in the final day of eliminations on Tuesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

UE has University of Santo Tomas as its final elims opponent but its fate is not entirely on its hands. To force a playoff for the No. 2 spot, the Lady Warriors must beat the Tigresses and hope that the Lady Archers lose to the Lady Eagles.

National University, with a 13-0 record, is just a win away from clinching an outright Finals berth. The Lady Bulldogs, who are on a 45-game winning streak, play the Lady Maroons on Tuesday.

Adamson University fell at 5-8 in fifth place, trailing UST (6-7) in the race for the remaining semifinals berth.

The Lady Falcons will get a playoff for the No. 4 slot if they beat Far Eastern University coupled by a Tigresses loss to UE. A win by UST will eliminate Adamson University from the semis race.

UP slipped to its 11th loss in 13 starts.
