Jeron Teng powered De La Salle University past reigning champion National University (NU), 67-63, on Sunday in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 78 men’s basketball at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Teng posted 18 points including an important basket that gave La Salle’s 64-59 advantage with only 23 ticks left.
“A win is a win and it doesn’t prove anything yet. It is still a long tournament. We are going to continue to learn every game,” said Teng, who also grabbed four rebounds.
Forward Jason Perkins made 13 points and hauled down 12 rebounds while freshman guard Andrei Caracut had 13 points and three assists, and forward Paolo Rivero added 11 points and eight boards for the Green Archers.
The win gave La Salle a 1-0 card to join opening day winners University of the Philippines (UP) and University of Santo Tomas.
“We show them that we are ready for this game. We came out really strong in this game although we committed some crucial turnovers in the dying seconds, which led to their easy baskets. I was disappointed because it happened in the backcourt,” said La Salle head coach Juno Sauler.
Gelo Alolino and Rodolfo Alejandro scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
In the second game, Far Eastern University routed Ateneo de Manila University, 88-64, to start its bid on a high note.
Roger Pogoy nailed 19, Mike Tolomia got 17 and Mac Belo added 16 for the Tamaraws.
