Defending champion De La Salle University overpowered Ateneo de Manila University, 25-14, 25-14, 25-19, to remain unbeaten in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Lady Archers cruised to their eighth straight win while the Lady Eagles fell to a 5-3 card. Reigning Most Valuable Player Abigail Marano scored 10 points for the Lady Archers.
In the first game, Adamson University nipped University of the Philippines (UP), 25-15, 25-9, 25-19.
Meanwhile, La Salle staved off a last-ditch UP rally to complete a first-round sweep, 8-7, in baseball.
Already comfortably ahead, 8-3, after eight innings, the Green Archers failed to score at the top of the ninth frame and saw the Fighting Maroons scoring machine go to work at the bottom final inning with a four-run explosion.
Luckily for the Green Archers, their rivals could go no further and posted their fifth straight victory while dealing their victims their third loss in four matches.
University of Santo Tomas (UST), meanwhile, made a nine-run scoring binge in the fifth and sixth innings to finally notch its first victory in four outings with a 12-5 decision over Adamson University, which fell into a tie with UP with the setback.
In juniors action, defending champions Ateneo blasted UST in five innings, 14-2, to deal the Tiger Cubs their second consecutive abbreviated loss this season.
