De La Salle University survived Far Eastern University, 75-66, for its fifth win in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 76 men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Jason Perkins led La Salle with 18 points while Jeron Teng and Almond Vosotros added 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The Green Archers improved to 5-4 mark for No. 4 position while the Tamaraws suffered their second setback. FEU, nonetheless, is still on top with a 7-2 card.
In the first game, National University (NU) routed Adamson University, 80-48, to grab the solo second spot.
Cameroonian Emmanuel Mbe scored 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting clip then hauled down 10 rebounds and had four steals to lead the Bulldogs to their sixth win in nine games.
Two-time Most Valuable Player Bobby Ray Parks Jr. chipped in 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and a block for NU.
“We were able to execute our game plan very well. We were able to do it on defense, we were able to run. Right now, every game is important [in the second round],” said NU head coach Eric Altamirano.
Roider Cabrera topscored for Adamson with 12 points and three rebounds while Jericho Cruz added 11 markers and four boards.
The Soaring Falcons absorbed their sixth loss against three wins.
It was the biggest winning margin (32 points) in the league since NU overpowered University of the East, 90-55, in July 14, 2012 in Season 75.
Meanwhile, University of the Philippines head coach Ricky Dandan won’t be calling the shots for the Fighting Maroons in the team’s remaining games, according to sources.
