La Salle targets solo second in UAAP women’s volley


De La Salle University (DLSU) will be gunning for solo second when it faces Adamson University today in the University Athletic Association Season 78 women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Lady Spikers battle the Lady Falcons at 2 p.m. followed by the tussle between University of Santo Tomas and Far Eastern University at 4 p.m.

La Salle and National University (NU) are tied at No. 2 spot with 2-1 each behind defending champion and tournament leader Ateneo de Manila University, which holds a clean 3-0 card.

The Lady Spikers failed to notch their third straight win following a 16-25, 24-26, 25-14, 23-25 loss to the Lady Bulldogs last Wednesday,

La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus wants to minimize their errors after committing 31 unforced mistakes against NU.

Middle hitters Mary Joy Baron and Mika Reyes, former Most Valuable Player Ara Galang and veteran setter Kim Fajardo must step up to keep the Lady Spikers on track.

Adamson, on the other hand, will be relying on Jessica Galanza, Myleen Paat, May Roque and Erika Alkuino.

The Lady Falcons fell to 1-1 after absorbing a 25-17, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25 loss to NU last week.

For its part, UST aims to bounce back from a 0-2 start this season.

The Tigresses succumbed to the Lady Falcons (22-25, 21-25, 25-20, 30-28, 14-16) and the Lady Eagles (22-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-25) in their first two games.

Cherry Rondina, Carmela Tunay, Ria Meneses and Jessey De Leon will be leading UST against FEU’s Toni Basas, Remy Palma, Jerrili Malabanan, Heather Guino-o and Bernadeth Pons.

In the men’s division, NU shoots for its third straight win as it takes on University of the Philippines at 10 a.m. while UST meets University of the East in the opening game at 8 a.m. EMIL C. NOGUERA
