La Salle to beef up basketball squad

The De La Salle University management is looking to add four to five rookies to beef up its lineup in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 77 men’s basketball tournament.

Among the top candidates are Prince Rivero, Julian Sargent, Terrence Mustre and Abu Tratter who are all raring to be part of the defending champions Green Archers.

According to La Salle’s representative to the UAAP Board Henry Atayde, the final composition of the team will be announced on the second week of June after consultations with the coaching staff and the school’s management.

The 6-foot-3 Rivero was a member of the National University high school team that won the UAAP junior division title in Season 74.

He transferred to La Salle Greenhills and steered the Greenies to a championship appearance in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 89. He bagged the season’s Most Valuable Player award after scoring 22.7 points, 16.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game on his final year with the Greenies.

The Filipino-American Sargent, for his part, went through a two-year residency. He played for Phoenix College in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II.

Mustre, son of former Philippine Basketball Association player Mike, had an impressive stint with Harris Academy in London, England while Tratter is a 6-foot-6 power forward who is also a Filipino-American recruit.

“We’re still studying everything. The coaching staff will decide on that matter and hopefully come up with our final lineup next month,” said Atayde.

La Salle, gunning for its ninth cage title, remains intact with holdovers Jeron Teng, Arnold Van Opstal, Norbert Torres, Almond Vosotros, Jason Perkins and returning center Yutien Andrada. Veteran mentor Juno Sauler is still the head coach of the Green Archers. The basketball tournament will begin on July 12.
