BAUANG, La Union: Forty-two people were injured when the bus they were riding slammed into a mango tree along the national highway in Barangay Paringao this town on Thursday morning.
Initial investigations showed that the bus, with body No. 2468 and plate number AVU-463, was bound for Bangued, Abra from Baguio City, when the driver lost control after overtaking another vehicle.
Gerald Banayat, one of the passengers, told The Manila Times that the accident happened at about 9 a.m.
The driver, identified as Henry Capia-ao, sustained severe head and body injuries and was rushed to the Ilocos Training Regional Medical Center.
Rescue group members Mike Zarate said those who suffered serious injuries were Capia-ao, bus conductor Ruel Urpiano, Helen Bughong, Jose Pedro, Marilou Florendo, Rhis Florendo, Rose Diyap, Julius Tangalin, Trinidad Benitez and William Mamaril.
Also taken to the hospital were Desiree Valdez, Jovyl Rivera, Rhea Deliz,; Sherwin Siti, Darwin Madrid, Rogen Castro, Richard Caoilie, Leo Dosono, Amelia Tremor, Drello Morel, Juluis Calicdan, Rogelio Man-zano, Ariel Lavarete, Araselie Gapuz, Kampbel Sannad, Felina Sarmiento, Algen Gomez, Carmelita Ragon, Gi-na Dio, Alexander Vergara, Wilfredo Licuanan, Stevenson Licuanan, Leonard Estillore, May Soriano, Noemi Soriano, Racquel Fernandez, Rey Fernandez, Asherine Sambrano, Clarita Domino, Gerald Banayat, Benjamin Baldo and Julie Ann Veronilla.
